At midnight on 15 July 2026, the border fence between La Línea de la Concepción and Gibraltar, known as the Verja, stopped existing as a physical checkpoint. It's the most significant border change in the region's recent history, and it directly affects anyone travelling between Malaga, the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar.

Since 15 July 2026 there are no passport checks at the land crossing between La Línea and Gibraltar. Gibraltar has not formally joined Schengen, but its airport and port now act as its external border, with passport checks and EES biometric registration for UK citizens.

Since 15 July 2026, there are no passport checks between La Línea de la Concepción and Gibraltar. People and vehicles move freely through the former checkpoint.
The territory remains a British Overseas Territory, outside the EU. What's changed is where checks happen: no longer at the land border.
Gibraltar's airport and port are now its external Schengen border. Arrivals by air or sea go through a check equivalent to any EU external border.

On foot, by car or by bicycle, crossing between La Línea and Gibraltar no longer requires showing a passport or going through any check. The roughly 15,000 daily cross-border workers, and the millions of tourists visiting Gibraltar each year, can now cross without queues or waiting at the former checkpoint.
This also means a Spanish-registered vehicle can enter and leave Gibraltar without restriction at the land crossing — something that wasn't previously possible.
If you arrive in Gibraltar by air, the passport check now takes place at the terminal itself, jointly managed by British and Spanish authorities.
